Osteolepiformes were a diverse group of crossopterygians
that first appeared in the Middle Devonian and became extinct
during the Permian. They have a single external pair of nasal
openings. They have strongly ossified paired fins, the pectoral
fin has a solid humerus, ulna and radius. The most primitive
forms have thick rhombic scales. Osteolepis are members of the
earliest family of osteolepiform fishes. They have simple heterocercal
tails and two dorsal fins.
